Happy First Day of Summer!
Every issue we ask our contributors a question related to the theme of the issue. In our latest issue, we asked, “With summer vacations just around the corner, what is your favorite knitting destination?” We received a bunch of great responses, including these that didn’t make the print cut. Read on and share yours below! —Theresa
“I love to knit at McDonald's...before you laugh you have to remember that I have three young kids and the Play Place keeps them entertained so I can sit and knit either with friends or while listening to an audiobook. Couple all of that with free drink refills and the fact that I don't have to clean up after anybody...that makes for happy knitting time!”
—Marlaina "Marly" Bird, designer Beachy Coverup
“We're pretty spoiled in Seattle when it comes to great yarn shops and idyllic knitting spots, so when it comes to travel knitting, it's more about the journey than the destination for me—meaning anywhere I have to travel by plane. Knitting is an awesome and calming way to while away the time, and an errant knitting needle can always help you regain control of the armrest from your neighbor. Kidding—sort of.”
—Jennifer Harper, writer “The Knitter’s Guide to Seattle”
“My favorite knitting destination is any of the beautiful beaches along Lake Michigan. I love the water, and nothing is better than lounging in the sand with your knitting on a sunny summer day.”
—Amy Polcyn, designer Island Skirt
“My favourite knitting destination is Parc Girouard, our local water park. Shady trees and cool breezes make for a great family day out in our hot Montreal summer. The children get to run around under the play fountains while I set up on the picnic blanket for the afternoon with our snacks, sun cream and my knitting; a portable project like an afghan block or a sock and I'm in summer heaven!”
—Melanie Fraser, designer Alphabet Monkey Blanket (Coming Next Issue)
“The only place where I have time to knit is on road trips, so my car is my favorite place!”
—Nicole Hill Gerulat, photographer
“My favorite knitting destination is Ashland, Oregon for the Shakespeare Festival. Since my husband does the driving, it's 6 hours of uninterrupted knitting pleasure in each direction! I'm giddy with excitement planning what to start and/or finish. The road trip itself is about the length of a mini-knitting retreat.”
—Pam Kee, designer Chevron Lace Afghan
