A Rare Find: Vintage Argyle Socks
On my latest visit to the antique market, I discovered these vintage argyle socks (1950's?) in perfect condition. In the 40's and 50's, it seemed that every woman in the world was practically required to knit at least one pair of argyles (even if she knit nothing else), yet I've never seen a vintage pair, especially in such perfect condition. It's clear that someone lovingly saved them for many years.
Perhaps they were never worn because one is almost half an inch longer than the other? They are also missing the narrow diagonal lines that are so characteristic of argyles, although many patterns did not include those narrow lines.

PS: Have you ever made argyles? Have you heard tales of argyles from older folks in your life? Let us know! We love stories about knitting nearly as much as we like doing it. :)
